As AI becomes more prevalent, I further come into the realization that we can scream “don't use AI (LLM/gen)” all we want but people will continue using it. There are varying reasons for this and rather than saying “stop using it,” we have to re-adjust and ask “why are you using it?” to find our answers. I firmly believe AI is a more nuanced topic than people realize and I say this as someone who has seen and is currently watching AI decimate 3 career fields I'm close to. There are good portions to AI but the they are so few and far between.
What's worse is I've seen it infiltrate the fandom space. People understandably saying no AI yet turn around and use AI assistance in fanfics. Videos use genAI to make “cool cosplay videos” of fake costumes, further worsening the pressure of “fast cosplay” in a historically slow hobby for content. AI runs rampant in roleplay spaces and chatbots (like Replika) are set to make billions by the end of the decade (Oct. 2024). There are real issues with this such as chatbot addiction which something that I have.
But we cannot control other peoples actions. We can only control our own. This page is meant to be my call to action. While people have “no AI” in their profiles, I find that isn't enough considering the AI tools available to us. If you use Grammarly, there's AI in it. If you use Photoshop? AI. Instagram? A newer Windows OS? AI. Some newer cameras also have some AI functions to them.
This page is my transparency page. You can see what tools I actively use in my personal art along with explanations of what they do. I also actively research media and tools and am willing to share for education purposes. My personal work differs from my professional work where I'm at a catch-22 and must engage with AI more to keep my team informed on the media side. But even then, I can share and be transparent so you can take these topics to your own workspace and argue why buying an Adobe Firefly model is counterproductive to your companies finances and it's just better to hire a human after all.
Not everyone will agree with me. Some may shun me completely. Honestly, that's okay. I'm not asking you to agree with me. You are an intelligent human being that can make their own decisions and I expect you to. I want you to. Yet if I can have you look at AI more broadly and walk away with resources to make your argument on AI stronger then I'll have done something good.
This page will be updated as my own views may update (as they have) over this topic. If you wanted a tl;dr: AI bad. Data centers bad. Lyn doesn't agree but she's in a catch 22. She controls it where she can. She also has a chatbot addiction that she's actively working on breaking. Wee wee.
